Summer 1996 was the peak of my interest in The Cure. I saw them three times on their Wild Mood Swings tour and it seemed that I spent a lot of time talking about, writing about, and listening to The Cure. After putting all of these pieces into HTML format, it's easy for me to see why I burned out on the band. I still listen to The Cure and I think they have some very good albums (Faith, Disintegration, Bloodflowers). But I couldn't ever get too excited about them again.
Two other major characters besides myself in the Summer of The Cure were my then-boyfriend Loren and our mutual friend Jon. Oh, and a stuffed chick that was cleverly named Mr. Chicken.
Caveats: There are quite a few inside jokes here. Also, my writing is more awkward than usual. I don't know if this is because I've improved as a writer or if I didn't make an effort to do my best writing since these weren't originally intended to be read by anyone apart from a few friends. Also, in case you are dumb and missed the point, there are a lot of references to The Cure!
Road Trip To Colorado: July 1996, on our way up to see The Cure play in Denver. One long day's worth of travel broken into nine semi-thematic segments:
Aliens and The Cure
Wild Mood Swings
Exits
Jon Takes The Wheel
Albuquerque
Dull
Rain
Jon Goes Insane
Colorado
The Solo Career of Robert Smith: A non-sexual fiction in which Robert Smith lives up to his "Fat Bob" nickname. The fruit of a night of stupid jokes. This also appears on a few Cure fan sites.
The Highly Unpleasant Trip to See The Cure In Albuquerque: A whim that doesn't quite pay off, partly because the three of us also travel with a schizophrenic. Don't miss the part where my boyfriend angrily throws a bag of pretzel snacks at me!
Jon Ruins My Appetite with a spur-of-the-moment parody of the Cure's "The Hanging Garden."
Other Adventures From The Summer of The Cure: I share some things I'd written in a small notebook then.
