The dark panes of glass reflect our faces as we wonder if every restaurant in this part of the city is closed. Eventually we wander past one that is open for business, with people sitting out on the patio. A man stands on the sidewalk, playing a large keyboard. We groan because he's covering adult contemporary music. A horse-drawn carriage runs down this street. Old couples in unflattering sunglasses go for rides, looking unimpressed. We decide to eat at the restaurant and sit at a table on the patio, a bit too close to the mediocre musician. Fortunately for us, he decides to take an extra-long break and settle far away with a book. We speculate on what he could be reading, perhaps "How to Play Good Music." Given his happily brief performance (which included a cover of "Captain of Her Heart" and some Kenny G pseudo-jazz), we jeer that it'll be a long time before he finishes. |
